Pie + Cake = Pake (recipe)

I love having fun! I love to try new crafts and recipes! I love making my kids or my guests say "huh?" Or "what?" Or better yet, "Yum!" This combination of Cake and Pie (inspired by the Lifetime TV show "Drop Dead Diva") creates a masterpiece called a PAKE, and this recipe checks all of those boxes!

I also watch a lot of TV, usually recorded and watched late at night after the kids are in bed and I have a moment to breathe. I started watching Drop Dead Diva when it first started. I thought it was good fun and a perfect way to end my weekend. Well, this season, one of the characters opened a "Pakery."

Well, we had guest coming for the weekend and I decided this was the time to try to make a pake. I wanted a little something different o share with the kids and no better time than to make dessert than when I have guests (so I do not eat it all!)


I googled it a bit and found a lot of pies baked into a cake, but that was not what I was looking for and then it appeared, the Drop Dead Diva Classic Pake Recipe. This was the Pake I wanted to make! Through my facebook posts, I even had a friend from L.A. make a Pake this weekend too. She made red velvet with cream cheese frosting and chocolate chips.

Here is what I made!
A Vanilla/Chocolate Marble Pake with chocolate glaze!
(half the kids wanted vanilla cake and half chocolate...so I had to make marble!)

THE RECIPE FOR THE MARBLE CAKE is adapted from the Domino Sugar's Chocolate Marble Cake .
YOU CAN ALSO USE  A CAKE MIX.

THIS MAKES 2 PAKES..or bake the remaining cake batter in a loaf pan at 350 for 45 minutes!

BASIC INGREDIENTS
  • Refrigerated (brought to room temperature) or frozen pie crust (thawed)
  • Pie tin. I used a 9" Pyrex pie pan
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cake batter (all ingredients for the type of cake you wish to bake - eggs, flour, sugar, etc. 
  • Skewer/knife/toothpick 
VANILLA CAKE, Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cups butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

CHOCOLATE CAKE, Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup water
CHOCOLATE GLAZE, Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 3 Tablespoons water
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 Cup powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla
Here is how to MAKE A PAKE!

MAKE IT!

Vanilla Batter:
  • Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda; set aside.
  • In a mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating after each one.
  • Combine buttermilk and vanilla.
  • Alternate between the flour and  milk mixture and add to the butter mixture.
  • Beat until blended.
Chocolate Batter:
  • Combine cocoa, sugar, baking soda and water

Chocolate Glaze:
  • Combine cocoa, water, butter, and honey in a sauce pan over a medium heat, until thickened.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla.
  • Beat to combine thoroughly
PUT IT TOGETHER!
  • Preheat oven to 360F - The Marble Cake/Pake called for 375F and the crust for 350F, so I went with 360. (yes, kind of random!)
  • Spray pie pan with non stick cooking spray (I did not but probably should have)
  • Place one pie crust in the pie pan and form it to the pan; trim excess.
  • Use a fork and punch multiple holes in the base of the pie crust for venting. 
  •  Place half the vanilla batter in the pie pan.
  • Drop dollops of chocolate batter on top and swirl with a skewer or knife or toothpick.
  • Cover the crusts edge with strips of aluminum foil.
  • Bake for 30 minutes at 360F.
  • After 30 minutes, reduce the oven heat to 325F and bake for approximately 30 more minutes, I started checking my Pake around 25 minutes. My Pake baked for about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
  • When done remove from oven and let cool. 
  • Whip up the chocolate glaze
  • Drizzle the chocolate glaze on each individual piece.

  5. You made it! Holly, it looks beautiful (and not a teensy bit turducken-y at all!!) ;) I LOVE The idea of replacing the corn syrup with honey, I've never heard of that before. I am big into healthier subsitutions. I'm going to have to try a Pake now, I love it!! xoxo
