Wreath Gift Topper (Quick, Easy, and Cheap DIY)

I am not the best gift wrapper - by a long shot!
But every year I try to come up with a fun way to embellish the Christmas gifts.
The last time I made paper flowers and I saved all of them.
(because I save everything)
I have used them over and over..but this year I wanted something different.
So for 2013 it is miniature wreaths adorned with satin ribbon or bakers twine.

And seriously these are SO EASY...SO CHEAP...and SO QUICK to make!

And then I spied this Spritz wrapping paper at Target (for $1 a roll!) and knew this was a match made in heaven.

Supplies
  • Darice Home for the Holidays Canadian Pine Stems. I purchased one package of 12 for $1.99
  • Bakers twine or satin ribbon
  • Scissors

Make it!
  • Cut one piece of bakers twine about 14" long
  • Cut one piece of bakers twine about 24" long (Less if you do not want a double bow)
  • Bring the two ends of the pine stem up to meet each other. (see photos below)
  • Twist them together once (or twice), leaving about 1" overhang
  • Wrap the 1" pieces around the pine stem.
  • Shape into a circle with your hands

Easy, right?! If you need a little help with your circles...just use a cup/jar/mug.

Tie the Bow
  • Using the 14" twine, fold it in half, lay the wreath on top of it and then loop the loose ends through the closed end, and pull just a bit (not all the way). This is called a Cow Hitch Knot (I just learned that!)
  • Now fold the 24" piece in half and slip it under the strings of the cow hitch knot.
  • Pull the loose strings of the cow hitch knot tight to secure.
  • Tie a bow using the longer twine/ribbon...all done!

VARIATION: to make a smaller wreath, wrap the pine stem around 2x. When the ends meet twist together to secure. You can also cut the pine stem in half...I happened to like the contrast with the thicker stems.

Attach these to just about anything...they are cute and simple and charming!

  2. Such a good idea!! I am trying to use up supplies and save money. So that means using brown and white paper up. This would be great to make it pop!
