I truly enjoy making fabulous birthday cakes for my kids, husband, family...
and friends if given the chance. I have made bowling pins and balls,
solar systems, trains, flowers, and giant cupcakes - to name a few.
Recently however, I have been baking up Bundt cakes and angel food cakes,
(a little less frosting!)
and had to devise new ways to decorate them!
I am enjoying the simple simplicity of a beautiful cake adorned with pretty paper.
It is so easy and so versatile...and everyone seems to love it!
I promise you...with the use of a die cutter (or course you could cut
the shapes out by hand too) this project and many, many like it are a
breeze! If you do not own a die cutter and you are a crafter or
baker...seriously consider investing in a product like the Evolution. It is one of my favorite tools ever!
Here is how I made these sweet heart
cake toppers and cake wrap.
Supplies
- Evolution die cutter (Lifestyle Crafts dies work with many manual die cutter...check it out here)
- Nesting Scallop Heart Dies
- Chalkboard Paper Pack or other 2-sided scrapbook paper (I used 2 sheets of 12 x 12 paper. I can yield 18 hearts - if you use the three smallest hearts in the package)
- Paper Straws. (Target, party supply stores - I buy plain white ones in bulk from Passion Purveyors)
- Pearls/Beads/Gems
- Hot Glue/Glue Sticks
Optional (Cake Wrap):
- Drink Sleeve Die
- 2 sheets of 12 x 12 paper (enough to cut 4 wrappers)
Make It: Cake Toppers!
- Cut the 12 x 12 sheet in half (the Genius platform is 6" wide)
- Place the three smallest heart dies on the magnetic base. I placed mine close together and towards the top - this allowed me to cut 2 sets from each 6" x 12" paper.
- Stack the paper on top; cover with the mat; run through the Evolution; Repeat 6 times. Then repeat with a second sheet for another 6 sets.
- This will yield in the end, enough hearts for 6 paper designs, 2 of each size (small, medium, large)
- Fold each heart in half. This paper is two sided, so I folded some one way and some the other to show different sides of the papers - but they all coordinate.
- On the paper straw add a line of hot glue; match up the fold of a heart, continue this, moving around the straw until all six hearts are attached.
- Place a dollop of glue on top of the straw and add a pearl (gem, bead)
- You will cut the straws later, if desired.
Cake Wrap:
- Cut 4 drink sleeves
- Connect them using the tabs. Wrap them around the cake - there will be overlap - I needed about 3 1/2 wraps, secure in place with adhesive.
Easy! Right?! Pretty..Of course! Fun...For Sure!
Using my Evolution Die Cutter from Lifestyle Crafts and a series of dies I have been able to create fun and fabulous cake accessories using paper, ribbons, and a few special baubles! I consider myself to be one lucky girl to be a part of the Lifestyle Crafts Studio Team for Parties and thankfully I always have a party or celebration happening!
