Before we jumped on that plane to Texas, I realized that my son had a phone, as did most of his friends, so he could keep in touch via text and email...but my 7 year old was a different story. No electronic gadgets for her and most of her friends...so I had to come up with something...and so "Moving Away Note Cards" were born.
This was such a simple project to pull together and brought my daughter some much needed smiles in the first few weeks and beyond. I will admit that her sweet friends were amazing about sending notes, photos, etc...but my daughter was not. She'd write the note and then hide them from me. UGH!
Here's what I did and what you need:
- Store-bought or homemade note cards with envelopes. I purchased a variety of note cards from the Target Dollar Spot and Michaels for $1.00-$2.00 a pack. You can also pick up cards in Targets stationery aisle.
- Stamps
- Your new address
- Optional: pen or pencil an ribbon
- I separated the note cards into bundle of 5 (you can do whatever number suits you best)
- On each envelop, I wrote my daughters name and NEW address (in the "send to" area).
- I placed one stamp on each addressed envelope.
- Tie the bundle of note cards up with a cute ribbon or twine, and add a pen or pencil...or even stickers if you want.
All that is left to do is to pass them out to your friends!
It was so sweet (I might have cried) to see so many notes pouring into our mailbox. It really helped my daughter with the transition and gave us a few more sweet memories of back home.
So, if you are planning a move, just a few minutes and a few dollars can brings a little bit of your old home to your new home for your kids!
Dear Jules, are you excided for school. I like that. Your idea of the moving cards is so clever, and maybe this will create some letter writers among these girls. An art that is no longer much practiced. Good idea for moms everywhere.
